How to avoid buying a flood car
Flood damage can show up months after purchase as corrosion, mold, and electrical failure. Screen the car before you buy.
Start with smell and moisture
A musty smell, heavy air freshener, damp carpet, or water stains in the trunk are common signs that a car has been wet inside.
Look where cleaning misses
Check under seat rails, in the spare tire well, behind trim edges, inside light housings, and under the dashboard for silt, rust, or corrosion.
Check the paper trail
A flood car may move across state lines before resale. Title history and registration timeline matter, especially after major storms.
- Run the VIN before you buy
- Ask for title photos
- Check for recent out-of-state transfers
- Get an independent inspection if anything feels off
