Questions to ask before buying a used car

Ask these before you drive across town, send a deposit, or sit down to negotiate.

Title and identity questions

Start with ownership and VIN identity. If the seller cannot answer these cleanly, do not move to price.

  • Is the title in your name?
  • Does the VIN on the title match the car?
  • Any salvage, rebuilt, flood, lien, or odometer brand?
  • Can I see a photo of the title before meeting?

Condition questions

Ask about the problems that change your offer, not just whether the car runs.

  • Any warning lights now or recently cleared?
  • When was the last major service?
  • Any leaks, overheating, transmission slip, or A/C issues?
  • Can I start it cold?

Negotiation questions

Do not negotiate from vibes. Ask questions that reveal urgency and flexibility.

  • How long has it been listed?
  • Are you open to an independent inspection?
  • What is the lowest number you would take today?
  • Would you fix open recalls before sale?
